PHARAOH KHUFU

DESCRIPTION: Think “Nero.” Vain, petulant, slavegirls tending to his every whim. Bathes in milk bath for entire film – we never see his legs. Never hears what people have to say to him – in his own world in his head; he is, after all, the incarnation of a god and behaves that way, with his subjects beneath his contempt. Only HIS ideas carry import. Refers to himself in the third person plural, “We are impatient.” “Our bath needs more milk” etc. He is not “villainous,” but rather “harmless” and more of a big baby.
PLOT: Against the protests of his Grand Vizier, Imhotep, he orders a giant smooth-sided pyramid as his tomb and legacy - first and largest of its kind - rather than the popular “step” model.

GRAND VIZIER IMHOTEP

DESCRIPTION: Duplicitous, scheming, like every second-in-command, he wants the top post. Utter contempt for his Pharaoh Khufu, but has no qualms invoking Pharaoh’s divine power when it suits him to keep subjects in line. Though Pharaoh calls him “Teppy” with impunity, Imhotep would gladly execute subjects who dare address him so disrespectfully.
PLOT: Though he begrudgingly accepts a commission to build a giant pyramid for Khufu, Imhotep does not know how with current technology, so challenges palace vendors to a competition to find the fastest way to move giant stones. He will take the repute and pay them off, or kill them all if they fail. Wants to get his son married to Pharaoh’s daughter, to force his bloodline into the palace. The faster he builds Khufu’s tomb, the quicker the deposition.

KHAFRE, Pub Team

DESCRIPTION: Our Hero, owner of palace pub, competitor. Inherited pub from father. “The mouth of a perfectly contented man is filled with beer.” (Egyptian saying – Khafre’s credo). Honest, easygoing – not exactly simple, but doesn’t bother with the day-to-day of pub business, which he leaves to best friend, Baba, who doesn’t mind, as long as Khafre backs him up in the occasional pub brawl. Content to let things run their course until he needs to get authoritative to move his life in the right direction.
PLOT: Motivated to win the stone-moving competition in order to marry Meresankh, his secret princess lover and daughter of Khufu. Through a synergy of sabotage, and with the help of a merchant sailor friend, he “discovers” the wind is his ticket into the history books.

BABA, Pub Team

Baba is happily married to Lilliankh and ultimately wants to settle down as a farmer.
PLOT: Supports Khafre unreservedly during Argument Scene. At Khafre's side when their stone sails in first under power of sail.

PLOT: Though he introduces himself and signs off with "Robert Foster for CNN," everyone calls him "Greg" for no reason, which he never seems to notice.

PLOT: His band, The Rolling Rocks, later renamed Pyramidiots, are convinced his harmonic sound waves will move stones across sand. They play to the stone. It doesn't move.

PLOT: His cult group sits around their stone during competition, praying. Nothing happens.
